Medicare is a great start, but does not provide all of the coverage you need. Supplemental insurance can help cover the Medicare gap. Medicare Part A and Part B typically cover only about 80% of your medical bills with prescriptions being partially covered under Part D. There are two types of policies available to fill these gaps; Medigap Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans.
Medicare Supplements
Medigap Supplement Plans A through N are available from numerous companies, however, all letter plan policies sold by all companies must be exactly the same. Generally you must have both Medicare Parts A and B to be eligible. These plans are a great way to minimize out-of-pocket expenses associated with the Medicare coverage gap.
Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage Plans are much like a standard medical plan and provide a host of comprehensive benefits that typically exceed standard Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans include Part D RX prescription coverage with no additional premium or deductible, as well as other popular benefits like vision and hearing coverage and health club fitness facility benefits at no additional cost. Medicare Advantage Plans can help you get more out of your health care dollar and have various premium options available including zero premium plans.
Part D RX Plans
If purchasing a Medigap Supplement plan rather than an Advantage plan, you will need to purchase a stand along Part D Prescription drug plan, whether you take prescription drugs or not. You must have and continue with what is know as “continuous credible coverage”. This can be purchased from a different company or carrier than the one you purchase your supplement from, hence the term “stand alone”. You want to purchase the least expensive option available that covers all of the prescriptions and review this on an annual basis.
